About Periodontal Treatment (Gum Disease).

Gum disease (Periodontitis) is a common problem that can go unnoticed by patients until it is severe.

Periodontitis is much simpler to treat if detected in early stages, often noticed from a check-up or hygiene visit. Untreated gum-disease will lead to tooth-loss. Reassuringly, treatment is mostly fairly simple and comfortable. Gum disease is not cured but stabilised. Although treatment aims to stabilise the disease, life-long maintenance is also required.   1. Assessment and treatment planning. A full assessment of your gums is carried out including charts and X-rays.
  2. Non-surgical periodontal therapy – essentially a “deep-clean” of your gums. Areas to treat are mapped out by the assessment at the first visit. Treatment can be separated into 1-4 visits depending on preference.
  3. A reassessment in 8-12 weeks, after healing.
  4. Further treatment, or maintenance.

  • Consultation: 30 minutes
  • 1 Quadrant: 60 minutes
  • Half Mouth: 90 minutes
  • Maintenance: 45 minutes

Typically treatment is carried out under anaesthetic, meaning your teeth & gums will be numb throughout and for a couple of hours afterwards. Some soreness from the gums is normal for a day or two afterwards.

Sadly, periodontitis is inflammatory, meaning it causes some swelling of the gums. When this inflammation improves, the gums can shrink or “recede” down the sides of the teeth, exposing the root surface or creating small spaces between the teeth. If these concern you, you should discuss options to improve their appearance with your regular dentist.
